European
Cultural Festival
Once again this year many singers, musicians, choirs and
musical bands have come together to offer an extensive and
varied programme of entertainment to celebrate the Day of
Europe on 9th May. This festival extends from mid-April to
mid-May and underlines the international flavour of
Torrevieja.
Thanks are due to those artistes and volunteers who have
freely given of their time to participate and, in doing
so, help raise funds for many local non-governmental
organisations.
Children can participate in a Treasure Map Hunt, and once
again walkers can amble along the seafront in an organised
charity sponsored walk. Pensioners have their own fun day
in the park. Nine nations will complete in the annual
International Petanca Competition.

Monday 16 April: Teatro Municipal 3 euros 20.30 pm Country
& Rock Nite:
A night of rock music in two different styles. Firstly,
modern country music in a foot tapping style by the
renowned Charles Cole, who sings and plays guitar,
accompanied by local line dancers. Torrevejense singer,
Shani, links the country rock with another type of modern
pop rock music played by the band Toca.

This well-established torreviejense choir, accompanied by
typical string instruments of the Mediterranean, offer a

This well-known Crevillente based band offers a
spectacular night of this muched-loved style of music and
song, ‘Rancheros and Boleros, typical of the Spanish
speaking world.

Two international groups play music in their own different
styles, demonstrating some of the talent and versatility
of musicians based in Torrevieja.

20 euros 20.30 pm Swing Night
Two vocal groups offer a splendid evening demonstrating
how the human voice is itself a musical instrument. The
mass choir of José Hodar is one of the oldest choral
groups of Torrevieja and Crescendo is an international
mixed voice choir singing light music.

Swing Night
The Swing music of the 1930’s and 40’s needs no
introduction, and the music of the legendary Glenn Miller
is brought to you on two consecutive nights by this
marvellous band from the United Kingdom.

A second opportunity to hear the music of the celebrated

Music for everyone
An explosive mixture of the concert music band Just Brass
that plays Showtime, traditional brass, jazz and classic
music, plus the veteran and brilliant virtuoso pianist Roy
Taunton, who received so many plaudits last year. Young
singer and musician Nick Gold adds another dimension to
this variety bill with numbers of Sinatra, Tony Bennett
and Joe Cocker.
Saturday, 28th April: Sponsored Walk in aid of the Cancer
Association (AEEC).
European residents organise and participate in the annual
sponsored walk along the seafront from the ‘Nautilus’ Rte.
at Rocio del Mar to Playa del Cura (and back!).
Velvetones,
Barbershopper and All That Jazz
Monday 30 April: Palace of
Music 3 euros 20.30 International Sing together
Tonight’s two choirs are experienced vocalists harmonising
in the traditional Barbershop style famous throughout the
world. Both the ladies’ Velvetones and the male
“Harmonisers” bring a sense of fun into serious singing.
The international “All that Jazz” band add another
American style of music with their Dixieland melodies.

Gospel Singers, Allegro and Cantabile

in the Park
These international groups demonstrate three completely
diverse manners of using the human voice. The stage is set
by the rousing gospel music of the Norwegian singers:
Allegro is a quartet of ladies who offer a delightful mix
of music. Cantabile is an international choir with a vast
repertoire of songs in various languages.
Here is an open invitation for pensioners of all nations
to enjoy a day of music and fun in the Torrevieja
Aquapolis grounds. Live bands will grace the stage whislt
there will be a Giant paella, BBQ and drinks available for
everyone.

Photographic Exhibition
by the media of Torrevieja. Through the eyes of the
international press and by means of photographs, this
exhibition offers an interesting visual look at some of
the events that have occurred in Torrevieja and
surrounding area.
(This is the very first such competition for the regional
press of whatever language.)

Once again in the plaza de la Constitución there will be a
folklore presentation by members of the European Union.
This includes the raising of the EU flag in front of the
town hall around midday.

The announcement of the winners by the jury and the
prizegiving ceremony of this, the third international
short story in English competition. The event will include
the presentation of the book containing a selection of the
best entries and those attending the ceremony will be
offered their own personal copy.

This lively group of talented local
residents dedicate their time, energy and enthusiasm to
those more in need. The ‘European Cultural Festival, 2007’
culminates with a variety show presented by these prolific
fundraisers.
