SPAIN -
ACTIVITIES - COSTA BLANCA -
FIESTA |
|
Fiestas
(celebration, festival, party) have a long tradition
in Spain. Its history with all dominations, Christians
against Moors, all the Saints etc., gives the Spanish
people a lot to remember, mark and celebrate. It is a
lot of fiestas all over the country trough the whole
year, and Spain would just not be the same without
them.
There are a number of themes that are celebrated in
almost all of the communities, but they each can have
various ways of celebrating. Some are noted here, but
the dates can vary from year to year so it is best to
check with the local tourist office. |

PATRÓN SANTO(A)
Each town/village (sometimes also a street) has its own "Patrón
Santo" (protecting saint) which they celebrate with
processions, dancing in the streets, live music and
firework (sometimes also sporting events). The
celebrations can last up to a whole week, 24 hours a day.
Normally the town's commercial activity shuts down during
some of these days. In some villages they celebrate this
fiesta together with the fiesta for "Moors and
Christians".
MOROS Y CRISTIANOS
(MOORS AND CHRISTIANS)
This fiesta is also celebrated all over Spain. The
Countries history is deeply rooted in the battles between
the Moors and the Christians which took place in the 13th
to 15th century. Each fiesta is a theatrical performance
with participants dressed in elaborate and expensive
costumes depicting both sides of the battle. The music
played by the live orchestras is especially composed for
the fiesta and is very dramatic.
CABALAGATA DE REYES
5 January each year is the Parade of the Three Wise Kings,
which is the day before children's Christmas day on
December 6, when they receive their presents. During the
parade the children are given sweets.
FESTIVIDAD DE SEMANA SANTA
(The holy week - Easter)
Most of the communities have fiestas during Easter, and is
normally celebrated with a religious processions, usually
with Jesus on the Cross being carried through the streets
followed by mourners wearing black and carrying candles.
CARNAVALES
February is the month of the carnival and most of the
towns and villages will have fiestas with singing and
dancing in the streets. Sometimes, however, the
celebrating can start already at the end of January, so be
sure to check with your local tourist office.
FERIA
Most communities will also have a Fair, but they are held
in different months. There is a lot happening during Fair
days, so it is well worth a visit. There will be dancing,
music, horse shows and wine tasting, to name a few of the
activities.
